Green Bay (10-4) refused to give up against a Bills team (7-7) that showed true grit and unparallelled moxie for 3 quarters. As it turned out, the 40-37 Packer victory was also a 'must' win. Just as you would expect in this League.
Both teams went over 600 yards in total offense, but both went about their business in different ways. The Bills rushed for 360 yards on 43 rushes led by John Humphery with 288 yards on 26 carries and a TD. Cedric Munoz also chipped in 70 yds and 2 scores on 15 carries.
Buffalo took the early lead on the very first play from scrimmage after the opening kick-off. Staking the Bills to an early 7-0 lead and the rout looked to be in high gear and Munoz scored twice more on 3-yard runs in the next five minutes of the game to take a commanding 21-0 lead after the 1st quarter.
Much maligned Packer QB, Barry Warner was 24 of 47 for 497 yards and 3 TD's and 1 interception for a 101.11 QB Rating. Glen Maciel caught 9 passes for 199 yards with 2 TD's, and Donald Yoder added 114 yards on 7 catches and 1 score.
The Green & Gold scored at 5:07 of the 2nd quarter on a nice 13 yard TD pass to Yoder to close the gaping gap to 21-7. Buffalo came back with a 47 yard FG from Kicker Moncrief to make it 24-7 but Packer kicker Carl Scott answered with a 55 yarder to close the gap once again at 24-10 with just 2 seconds remaining in the half.
Green Bay Running-back William Boyd opened the scoring in the 2nd half with an 89 yard sprint to the end-zone at about the 10:00 mark, making it 17-24. The Bills punted on 3 consecutive possessions, the Packers wasted little time. Taking only :59 on 2 plays to score on a 75 yard pass to Glen Maciel tying the score at 24-24 heading into the final quarter of play, or so we thought!
Buffalo opened the scoring in the 4th with a 10 yard TD strike from QB Roberto Mendoza to WR Kyle Rodriguez at the 13:47 mark, and a 27 yard Field Goal by Moncrief at 7:54 left, to make it a 10 point cushion at 34-24, and it didn't look good for the Pack.
No so! Green Bay took the ensuing kickoff and took only 4 plays to drive 80 yards, concluding in a 9 yard touchdown run by RB Alexander Driscoll with time running out and the 2 point conversion failed, leaving the score at 30-34.
The Packers looked again to the Passing game as the clock was running down and the Warner to Maciel connection struck again from 14 yards with 1:49 left on the clock, and a 37-34 lead.
But the resilient Bills would not go away. Moncrief, once again, was magic as he stroked a 26 yard FG with but :02 on the game clock Tying the score at 37 apiece
In overtime, the Bills were held to a 3 and out. The Packers ended it after holding Buffalo on 4th down and on their possession, and Carl Scott kicking a 30 yard game winning Field Goal.
Green Bay is yet to qualify for the playoffs, one win might do it, or maybe not. They can still win the Division with 2 wins. They close the season at Chicago and at home with the division leading Minnesota Vikings, whom they defeated in Game 7 of the season, 15-10.
This one could go either way!
Good Luck to Vikes!
